There was a time when I didn't have to travel on the cheap, but that was when I had my own business.On the down side I had to limit my expense account travel to Western Europe, since it was the French restaurant business.On the positive side, it's hard to get bored eating in London, Paris, Lyon,Marseilles, and Brussels.
Before my own business I worked as the programming systems/software systems engineer for IBM's Midwest Region, involved with future planning and software assistance to 21 branch offices, as well as user groups.The only travel expenses I had to pick up then was my beverage tab, and the hotels were never second class.Now I have had to rethink the importance of comfort, while traveling on my public school teacher's paycheck these past 7 years.
